HOO-ray for Hootie! Injured Owl Rescued At Hosford

ATLANTA Updated Thu September 4, 2014

Hootie

September 4th is National Wildlife Day and what better way to mark the occasion than with a good news story!

A few weeks ago, a group of employees at our Hosford, Florida OSB mill discovered a striking, yet injured barred owl in the mill’s wood pile.  Exhausted and malnourished, the owl had a badly broken wing so the area was roped off and help was quickly called.  Employees suspected that the owl – affectionately nicknamed Hootie – may have been hunting in the log yard area several days before.

Madison McNealey, the mill’s environmental coordinator, arranged for Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary in Tallahassee to rescue Hootie.  Due to her lack of nourishment, veterinarians at the rehabilitation center first needed to stabilize her before they could start treating her wing.  While Hootie is still on the mend, it will be months before her wing will fully heal and she will be reintroduced into the wild.

So, we say a “hoo-ray” for the quick thinking by our Hosford employees and we wish Hootie well in her recovery!
