Industria Limpia Environmental Excellence recognition
Toluca, Mexico, tissue converting plant

As part of the Mexican government’s Industria Limpia (Clean Industries) environmental excellence program, GP’s tissue converting plant in Toluca, Mexico, was recognized for going beyond environmental compliance to preserve the environment.

2006

Arkansas Recycling Coalition Corporate Recycler of the Year
Fort Smith, Ark., cups, plates and cutlery facility

The Fort Smith, Ark., facility earned the 2006 Corporate Recycler of the Year Award from the Arkansas Recycling Coalition. The facility makes the company’s Dixie® brand of cups, plates and cutlery.

Wisconsin Governor's 2006 Pulp and Paper Energy Efficiency Award
Green Bay, Wis., Broadway tissue and towel mill

Employees at the Green Bay, Wis., Broadway facility received the Wisconsin Governor's 2006 Pulp and Paper Energy Efficiency Award. This is the state’s top honors for energy efficiency. The mill introduced a new drying system that reduces the use of natural gas and provides an annual energy savings of $650,000. Employees expect to save an additional $50,000 (annually) once the new system is optimized.

AF&PA Environmental & Energy Achievement Award – Honorable Mention
Palatka, Fla., tissue and towel mill

Palatka, Fla., employees received honorable mention during the America Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) Environmental & Energy Achievement Awards held in Washington, D.C. Palatka employees were recognized for using a new scientific approach to understand how the mill’s effluents may impact area aquatic ecosystems.

United Nations Development Program (UNDP) World Business Award
Karamursel, Turkey, tissue and towel facility

Georgia-Pacific’s joint venture with the Eczacibasi Group in Turkey, was one of 10 recipients of the 2006 World Business Award presented by the UNDP. The award is part of an initiative that works with developing nations to improve the quality of life, and eradicate diseases and poverty. To help reduce the spread of prevalent diseases, such as typhoid fever and dysentery, GP’s Solo® bathroom tissue team sponsored the Solo Primary School Personal Hygiene Education Project, which taught more than three million children about the importance of using tissue paper to improve personal health and hygiene.

National Performance Track Program
Conway, N.C., chemical facility
Georgia-Pacific's Conway, N.C., chemical facility was accepted into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Performance Track program. Performance Track is a voluntary program that recognizes and rewards businesses and public facilities that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental performance. A requirement of the program is the development of an Environmental Management System, which helps a facility organize and simplify environmental processes, documentation and record keeping. Georgia-Pacific now has five facilities in the program.

2005

Virginia Governor’s Silver Environmental Excellence Award
Big Island, Va., containerboard mill

The Big Island, Va., containerboard mill received a 2005 Governor’s Silver Environmental Excellence Award for its environmental management system. The mill was one of six winners in the large manufacturer category. The awards are sponsored by the state’s governor, secretary of natural resources, environmental department and the Virginia Manufacturer’s Association.

In 2005, Georgia-Pacific's Albany, Ore.; Columbus, Ohio; Vienna, Ga., chemical facilities were accepted into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Performance Track Program. Performance Track is a voluntary program that recognizes and rewards businesses and public facilities that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental performance.

Frank Concon Award for Environmental Excellence
Muskogee, Okla., consumer products mill
Georgia-Pacific’s Muskogee, Okla., consumer products mill was awarded the Frank Concon Award for Environmental Excellence by the Environmental Federation of Oklahoma. The mill received the award for its Fuzzy Filter Effluent Recycle Project that conserved nearly 800 million gallons of water and recycled almost 1.3 billion gallons of effluent in 2005. Usually used for sanitary wastewater discharges, the mill installed a fuzzy filter system to reduce water consumption from the local river.

2004

Outstanding Pollution Control Facility
Rincon (Savannah River), Ga., tissue mill
Georgia-Pacific's Rincon (Savannah River), Ga., tissue mill received the Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association award for Outstanding Operation of an Industrial Pollution Control Facility in the category of Direct Wastewater Discharge-Biological Treatment. The award was based on safety and environmental records, emergency response programs, facilities management and overall operations.

Georgia-Pacific's Russellville, S.C., chemical facility became the first Georgia-Pacific facility to be accepted into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Environmental Performance Track program. Performance Track is a voluntary program that recognizes and rewards businesses and public facilities that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental performance.

Air and Waste Management Award
Cedar Springs, Ga., containerboard facility
Georgia-Pacific's Cedar Springs, Ga., containerboard facility was recognized with an environmental award in the air category from the Georgia Chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA) for the mill's use of low-air flow hoods. The hoods reduce the amount of methanol emissions by nearly 80 percent during the pulp washing process. Awards are presented each year to industrial, commercial and governmental organizations that successfully go beyond regulatory compliance to achieve demonstrable environmental improvements.

Camas, Wash., tissue facility
The Camas, Wash., tissue facility was awarded the 2004 Environmental Excellence Award in the Education category by the Association of Washington Businesses and the Northwest Environmental Business Council.

Outstanding Mill Achievement
Toledo, Ore., containerboard facility
Georgia-Pacific's Toledo, Ore., containerboard facility was awarded the Outstanding Mill Achievement Award by the Northwest Pulp and Paper Association.

Superior Environmental Compliance
Spartanburg, S.C., packaging facility
The Spartanburg Sanitary Sewer District presented the Superior Environmental Compliance Award to Georgia-Pacific's Spartanburg, S.C., packaging facility.

William Lindamood Award
Chemical division recognized by Wilsonart, a major customer
Georgia-Pacific's chemical business received the William Lindamood Award from Wilsonart for the group's work on developing a resin that reduced emissions and helped improve Wilsonart's work environment. The award is presented to suppliers that have a high caliber of product quality and consistency, and quality of customer and supplier processes.

Annual Environmental Award
Bellingham, Wash., tissue Facility
The Bellingham, Wash., tissue facility received the 2003 Annual Environmental Award from the Northwest Pulp and Paper Association.

Environmental Excellence Awards
Tacoma, Wash., gypsum and Bellingham, Wash., tissue facilities
Two of our facilities—Tacoma, Wash., gypsum and Bellingham, Wash., tissue— received 2003 Environmental Excellence Awards from the Association of Washington Business for their commitment to air quality and resource conservation.

Environmental Water Protection Award
Cedar Springs, Ga., containerboard facility
The Cedar Springs, Ga., containerboard facility received the Georgia Chamber of Commerce 2003 Environmental Water Protection Award for water conservation programs.

Environmental and Energy Achievement Award
Monticello, Miss., containerboard facility
The Monticello, Miss. containerboard facility received the 2002 Environmental and Energy Achievement Award from the American Forest & Paper Association for its recovery boiler renovation project.
