Georgia-Pacific Safety Performance Receives Industry Recognition
In 2006, as in past years, industry groups recognized several Georgia-Pacific facilities for their safety performance. Recognition came from the American Forest & Paper Association, The Pulp & Paper Safety Association and APA–The Engineered Wood Association.Safety Awards
2006American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) Safety Excellence Awards
American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presents its Safety Excellence awards to recognize member company facilities that achieve exemplary performance in health and safety in 2006. AF&PA is a trade association for the forest, paper and wood products industry. The awards are categorized by type of operation (pulp and paper, converting, lumber and wood products, etc.) and by number of annual work hours. Winners in each category have the lowest OSHA total case incident rate (TCIR).
Winners of the AF&PA’s 2007 Safety Excellence award in their respective categories:
- Port Hudson, La., consumer products mill
- Madison, Ga., plywood mill
- Richmond, Ind., Color-Box operations
- Wood and fiber supply employees in the Mid-South group (which includes Ala., Fla., and Ga.)
The Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) presented six of 11 Sawmill Safety Awards to Georgia-Pacific sawmills at Claxton and Monticello, Ga.; Cross City, Fla.; Russellville, S.C.; Crossett, Ark.; and Taylorsville, Miss., for their outstanding safety record throughout 2006.
2005American Forest & Paper Association Safety Excellence Award
American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presented its 2006 Safety Excellence Award, for 2005, to employees at the Emporia, Va., plywood plant and employees of wood procurement operations in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Winners in each category had the lowest OSHA total case incident rate (TCIR) in 2005.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s National Special Government Employee AwardKerry Fischman, Georgia Pacific’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) manager, was named the 2005 National Special Government Employee (SGE) Award winner by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The SGE program allows industry employees to participate in VPP onsite evaluations, and the award recognizes employees who exhibit support, time, effort and action in VPP.
2004AF&PA Safety Excellence
Cedar Springs, Ga., containerboard mill and Dudley, N.C., oriented strand board plant
Georgia-Pacific facilities at Cedar Springs, Ga., and Dudley, N.C., were recognized with the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) Safety Excellence Awards. AF&PA, a national trade association for the forest, paper and wood products industry, presents the awards annually to member company facilities with exemplary health and safety records. Cedar Springs containerboard was recognized in the over 1.5 million-hour category with a 2004 total case incidence rate (TCIR) of 0.26. Dudley was recognized in the 250,000 annual work hours category with a TCIR of 0.0.
First National VPP Corporate Participant
In 2004, OSHA selected Georgia-Pacific as the first company in its new Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Corporate pilot. The VPP Corporate pilot was designed to streamline the VPP application and onsite evaluation processes for corporations that have made a commitment to VPP.
Star Among Stars
The distinguished "Star Among Stars" designation from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was awarded to the following Georgia-Pacific facilities: Santa Teresa, N.M., corrugated sheetfeeder (Star of Excellence); Waxahachie, Texas, packaging (Star of Excellence); Sweetwater, Texas, gypsum board (Star of Excellence); Fordyce, Ark., oriented strand board (Super Star); Fordyce, Ark., plywood (Super Star); and Port Hudson, La., pulp & paper (Star).
Composite Panel Association
Seven Georgia-Pacific facilities received awards from the Composite Panel Association (CPA) based on achieving the lowest recordable OSHA incidence rates. Georgia-Pacific's Louisville, Miss., particleboard plant received the top award in the small plant category and for lowest OSHA recordable incidence rate in 2004. Additionally, the Russellville, S.C., particleboard plant received the top award in the large plant category for having the lowest average incidence rate for 2002 through 2004.
The five plants were recognized for being 50 percent or more below the industry average for 2002-2004. They are: Louisville, Miss., particleboard; Russellville, S.C., particleboard; Monticello, Ga., medium density fiberboard; Holly Hill, S.C., medium density fiberboard; and Taylorsville, Miss., particleboard.
Gypsum Association Safety Awards
Many G-P Gypsum facilities won top safety awards from the Gypsum Association for a zero recordable incidence rate and no lost time accidents. These include: Canal Flats, British Columbia, Canada; Camden, N.J. (nine years no lost time); Ft. Dodge, Iowa (two years no lost time); Newington, N.H. (two years no lost time); Sweetwater, Texas (two years no lost time); and Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
The four joint compound plants at Marietta, Ga.; Milford, Va.; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and Longueuil, Quebec, Canada; received the Presidential Award for zero recordable incidents in 2004.
Several facilities won safety awards for no lost-time accidents. Winning wallboard plants included: Antioch, Calif. (six years); Brunswick, Ga. (four years); Canal Flats, British Columbia, Canada; Canby, Ore.; Las Vegas, Nev. (six years); Long Beach, Calif. (two years); San Leandro, Calif.; Savannah, Ga.; and Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
The following facilities were recognized with the 1,000 Safe Days Achievement Award for working 1,000 or more consecutive injury-free workdays: Antioch, Calif.; Camden, N.J.; Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Sweetwater, Texas; Savannah, Ga.; Tacoma, Wash.; and Wheatfield, Ind.
2003
Pulp and Paper Safety Association Best Record
Georgia-Pacific's Rincon, Ga., tissue mill received the 2003 Pulp and Paper Safety Association award for Best Record, Category I, for paper mills.
American Plywood Association Awards
Georgia-Pacific facilities received awards from the American Plywood Association (APA) based on their time without an OSHA incident. They are: Hawthorne, Fla., plywood facility; Warm Springs, Ga., plywood facility; and Grenada, Miss., oriented strand board facility.
The APA also named the following facilities as Top Ten safety achievers for achieving the lowest OSHA incidence rates: Brookneal, Va., oriented strand board; Emporia, Va., plywood; Warm Springs, Ga., plywood; and Mt. Hope, W.V., oriented strand board.
Gypsum Association Safety Awards
Three Georgia-Pacific facilities won safety awards from the Gypsum Association for no lost time in a wallboard plant or quarry. They are: Brunswick, Ga.; Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, Canada; and Canal Flats, British Columbia, Canada.
The four joint compound plants at Milford, Va.; Marietta, Ga.; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and Longueuil, Quebec, Canada; won the Presidential Award for zero recordable incidents in 2003. Additionally, the following facilities were recognized for operating one or more years without a lost-time incident: Camden, N.J., wallboard; Las Vegas, Nev., wallboard; Antioch, Calif., wallboard; Brunswick, Ga., wallboard; Wheatfield, Ind., wallboard; and San Leandro, Calif., paper.
AF&PA Safety Excellence
Central region, wood and fiber supply
In 2003, Georgia-Pacific's central region wood and fiber supply organization, based in Crossett, Ark., was recognized in the over 200,000-hour category by the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA). AF&PA is the national trade association of the forest, paper and wood products industry and represents more than 250 companies and related associations.

2006Institute of Internal Audit Recognition of Commitment Award
The internal audit department, part of the company’s finance group, was one of 26 organizations worldwide to win IIA’s Recognition of Commitment award for 2005. Georgia-Pacific was the first company in the forest products industry to receive the award, based on criteria including professional excellence, quality and outreach.
2005Best Workplaces for Commuters
Georgia-Pacific was named one of the Best Workplaces for CommutersSM in 2005. Established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Transportation, this program publicly recognizes employers whose commuter benefits reach the National Standard of Excellence. Employers agree to a minimum level of employee participation, designate a central point of contact for employee questions, provide an emergency ride home for participating employees, and offer a choice of commuter benefits.
Military-Friendly Employers
For the second consecutive year, G.I. Jobs magazine named Georgia-Pacific as one of the top "military-friendly" employers in the United States. Georgia-Pacific received this distinction based on the strength of company military recruiting efforts, the percentage of new hires with prior military service, and company policies toward National Guard and Reserve service.
Catalyst Award
The prestigious Catalyst Award was presented to Georgia-Pacific for the company's investment in career development and advancement of women.
Lifelong Learning Employer of the Year
Georgia-Pacific's Stubbins, United Kingdom, tissue mill won the Lifelong Learning Employer of the Year award from the Manchester Employer Coalition for its staff development programs, including the development of on-site learning centers at the Stubbins and Horwich tissue mills, and the Bryn distribution facility.
AFL-CIO 2005 Labor-Management Award
Georgia-Pacific received the AFL-CIO 2005 Labor-Management Award, which recognizes cooperative relations between company management and labor.
CEO of the Year
Pete Correll, Georgia-Pacific's chairman emeritus and retired CEO, was named by industry analysts as the 2005 CEO of the Year for the paper and forest products industry. The award, presented by Paperloop, is based on an annual survey of the investment community to recognize a leading industry executive. Criteria for the award include leadership, vision and strategic accomplishment.
Executive Papermaker of the Year
PaperAge magazine named Georgia-Pacific's chairman emeritus and retired CEO Pete Correll as its "Executive Papermaker of the Year." The award is based on corporate vision, strategic accomplishment and leadership within the individual's company and the paper industry.
Atlanta Better Business Bureau Torch Award
Georgia-Pacific was presented with the 2005 Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in recognition of the company's values and overall business ethics practices. Georgia-Pacific won in the category of an Atlanta-based company with more than 1,000 employees.
IT Organization of the Year
Georgia-Pacific's information technology group was named "Organization of the Year" by the International Association for Human Resource Information Management (IHRIM), Atlanta/Southeast chapter for its work on Web applications that allow employees to access their personal information. Each year, IHRIM recognizes companies that have developed and implemented innovative human resource system practices to add strategic value to their business.
2004
FedEx Kinko's Best New Supplier Award
Georgia-Pacific's packaging plant at Memphis, Tenn., received FedEx Kinko's Best New Supplier award for its overall customer service and product. The plant, which won the contract in 2004, supplies boxes to 1,100 FedEx Kinko's Office and Print Center stores throughout the United States.
Vendor of the Year
Chemical division recognized by Munters
The industrial resins group of Georgia-Pacific's chemical division was named Vendor of the Year 2004 by Munters Corp. for providing consistent excellence in both products and service. Georgia-Pacific supplies Munters with phenolic resins for evaporative cooling. That technology makes it possible to cultivate plants and raise poultry in hot, dry climates, and is also used in climate control systems for cooling and improving air quality in factories, offices and private homes.
Supplier of the Year
Georgia-Pacific's consumer products retail business was recognized by Wal-Mart as Supplier of the Year for Department 4. That department includes paper and household chemicals. Georgia-Pacific was also recognized as a Wal-Mart $1 billion supplier. Out of 68,000 suppliers, Georgia-Pacific was one of just 24 companies at this level, joining other well-known names such as General Electric, Sony, 3M and Clorox.
Corporation of the Year
In 2004, Georgia-Pacific was named the Corporation of the Year by the Atlanta Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs.
Top Military-Friendly Employers
G.I. Jobs magazine named Georgia-Pacific as one of the top "military-friendly" employers in the United States. Georgia-Pacific ranked 11th overall based on the strength of company military recruiting efforts, the percentage of new hires with prior military service, and company policies toward National Guard and Reserve service.
The Home Depot Partner of the Year
The Home Depot Partner of the Year award was presented to Georgia-Pacific's building products group for outstanding customer service from 2003-2004.
2003
Lowe's Supplier of the Year
Georgia-Pacific's structural panels group was awarded the 2003 Lowe's Supplier of the Year award for its overall customer service.
Georgia Women's Business Council Buyer of the Year
Georgia-Pacific increased its expenditures with women-owned businesses by 10 percent in 2003, leading to recognition from the Georgia Women's Business Council. Georgia-Pacific's manager of supplier diversity was awarded Buyer of the Year.
The award is granted to a corporate representative who has increased corporate annual spending with women-owned business enterprises. The Georgia Women's Business Council is the regional partner of the Women's Business Enterprise National Council, an advocate of women-owned businesses as suppliers to America's corporations.
