Georgia-Pacific Cooperative Education in IT

At Georgia-Pacific, we recognize the importance of a successful cooperative education program. GP partners with colleges and universities to create opportunities for students to combine their course of academic study with real world IT applications.

The GP Information Technology program gives you hands on work experience in IT and lets you apply classroom fundamentals to everyday business practices. GP believes this combination of school and work will give you a competitive edge when you enter the workforce.

Our definition of a co-op is someone working toward the completion of a bachelor's or advanced degree at an accredited four-year college or university. In addition, students must be enrolled at a school that offers a formal cooperative education program, and must be able to meet the requirements of the program at their school.

Students are placed in technical positions based on their interests, skill set, and positions related to their majors or career goals. We offer competitive salaries to co-ops based on the national standard for similar and competing industries.

Georgia-Pacific invests in cooperative education for a variety of reasons. Early identification of potential long-term hires is one of the most important. Permanent employment is based on job availability and past academic performance. While a permanent job is not guaranteed, the experience you gain as a GP co-op student will greatly enhance your ability to become part of our workforce.

Eligibility

First, you must be enrolled at a school that offers a formal Cooperative Education Program and be able to meet the requirements of the program.

Additionally, you must be a candidate for a degree that is compatible with the co-op position you seek, have demonstrated leadership ability (either in high school, college, or on the job), have excellent communication skills, and be willing to locate in proximity to the co-op positions available in our region.

Position availability

Georgia-Pacific continually recruits students for co-op positions throughout the year. The number of positions varies each semester according to need. Students are eligible to return to GP if job and school performance are satisfactory and a business need exists.

Student benefits

In addition to combining theories learned in the classroom with philosophies practiced at a Fortune 100 employer, students gain a competitive edge toward employment after graduation and a clearer perspective of individual career objectives.

Specific benefits when employed by Georgia-Pacific include:
  • Challenging and stimulating work assignments in leading edge technology
  • Competitive salaries, which increase as additional credits toward the degree are earned
  • Paid holidays during assignment period according to site procedures
  • GP will ensure a smooth transition into the community, by offering assistance in finding appropriate living arrangements
