Interview Tips

Be Prepared

  • Do your homework and research the company beforehand. Know its products and services, its profit margin, management, culture, etc.
  • Polish up your resume before you start the job search process. Develop multiple resumes, each tailored to specific job interests. Edit and re-edit your resumes to perfection!
  • Ask for a resume critique from your career services center.
  • Practice your interviewing skills by answering questions out loud in a mirror, or practice with a friend.
  • Allow plenty of time to get to the interview.
  • Dress professionally. Wear a navy or black suit and (for men) a white, long-sleeved shirt. Keep your tie or accessories conservative and simple.
  • Know what you are looking for in a position. Assess why this position is important to you.

During the Interview

  • Body language is key. Remember to maintain eye contact, shake hands with confidence, keep up to pace with the interviewer as you walk, and wait for the interviewer to sit before seating yourself.
  • Know and be able to articulate your strengths, skills, and challenges.
  • Be prepared to discuss how your work and academic experience have prepared you for the real world.
  • Come to an interview with questions about the company and position.
  • Bring extra copies of your resume.
  • Speak slowly and clearly.
  • Be yourself and be honest.
  • Be confident. Don't be afraid to let them know you want the job.
  • Collect business cards or at least contact information from everyone you speak to so you can follow up with a letter. Don't confuse company representatives.
  • Always be positive - never criticize your previous company or boss

After the Interview

  • After the interview, make sure you know the basics of the job: location, description, reporting manager's name, why the position is open, training plan, and working hours per week.
  • Explore all options before making a decision on a career opportunity. Don't look at salary alone; look at the total picture.
  • Be flexible and mobile.
  • Invest the time in doing an internship or taking a co-op job to support your degree.
  • And last, but not least, have fun and good luck!
