A Forest Is ... deciduous - trees that lose their leaves in winter

evergreen - trees that keep their leaves or needles all year

flood plain - a plain along a river or other body of water formed from sediment deposited by floods

forest edge effect - when open spaces, roads, trails and borders between forest types allow sunlight through to the forest floor encouraging the growth of wildflowers and other plants

indicator species - the most abundant tree types in a forest usually indicating a specific kind of habitat

sediment - soil or other matter deposited in a river or other body of water

temperate forest - forest with long growing seasons, mild winters and regular rainfall that spans the Northern Hemisphere from North America to Asia
