Georgia-Pacific: Committed to Environmental Responsibility

Bird Georgia-Pacific is extremely proud of its extensive efforts to preserve and protect our invaluable environment and natural resources. The measures we've taken at our Palatka, Fla., paper mill are prime examples of our commitment. Having spent more than $200 million over the past 10 years in environmental improvements at this mill, it's clear we take environmental stewardship seriously. This investment includes measures that far exceed the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Cluster Rule technology requirements. We are proud to have gone the extra mile and will continue to evaluate ways to do so in the future.

A Worldwide Commitment

It is Georgia-Pacific's written, worldwide policy to manage operations and to develop, produce, distribute and market products in a manner that protects the environment, as well as the health and safety of employees, customers, contractors and the communities in which we operate. We do this while fully complying with applicable laws and regulations. The company will continuously improve environmental health-and-safety performance toward a goal of zero incidents.

Creek We consider this outlook more than just good sense. It's also good business. After all, the air, water, soil and other resources that sustain our world also sustain our business. From responsible energy use to product stewardship and emission reductions, we are dedicated to delivering innovative solutions through sustainable practices.

To assure that this guiding philosophy remains on track, we have adopted comprehensive audit and training programs, and environmental guidance information is available to all of our employees.

Global Efforts, Local Results

In the last 10 years, the Georgia-Pacific Palatka mill has reduced its effluent-discharge volume by 40 percent, cut phosphorous contributions to the St. Johns River by 73 percent and reduced nitrogen contributions by more than 50 percent. These results speak volumes about our global effort to remain good stewards of the environment. It is a commitment we take seriously. And it is a commitment that will never be diminished.
