Georgia-Pacific’s CEO, Jim Hannan is named the 2014 Posse Atlanta Power of 10 honoree. He was presented with the award by Harvin Vallabhaneni, Boston University Posse Alumnus and Zenith Houston, Director Posse Atlanta during the organization’s annual event.

There’s no disputing that education is the very cornerstone of a strong, thriving community, which is why you will find Georgia-Pacific involved and invested in a wide range of educational programs.  There is one common goal for the initiatives we support: to provide students with greater opportunities to learn and develop into productive, value-creating citizens.

The Posse Foundation is a unique program we’re supporting that’s doing just that. Posse recruits and trains outstanding urban high school seniors and sends them with full-tuition scholarships to top universities in multicultural, supportive teams – Posses – of 10 students.

The Posse Foundation identifies the predictors of success and recognizes students with both academic excellence and extraordinary leadership skills, and then it uncorks students’ potential. Posses are carefully selected teams that are challenged to make positive change in their communities and become the next generation of leaders.

These are just some of the reasons why Georgia-Pacific has supported Posse since the start of its Atlanta chapter.  We’re also proud that several high school students from Georgia-Pacific’s signature education program on entrepreneurship – Youth Entrepreneurs Georgia – have been accepted as Posse scholars.

Posse scholars graduate at a rate of 90 percent and are achieving the high standards they’ve set for themselves – they’re contributing to cancer research, conducting important studies, making policies and receiving Fulbright scholarships. Posse has recruited and trained more than 5,500 students who have earned more than $688 million in full-tuition, leadership scholarships.

As companies and organizations, we’re more successful when we embrace different backgrounds, experiences and diversity of thought in everything we do.  It’s going to take strong leaders from all walks of life to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

That’s why Posse scholars have so much to offer and why we’re investing in tomorrow’s leaders. We congratulate The Posse Foundation’s 25th year of successfully making this a reality!
