At a community service group meeting this Veterans week, those who are veterans were asked to stand to be recognized. I was quite surprised to see how few veterans there actually were in this room full of mainly middle-aged to aging men. It made me think about what I had gained and they had missed by not serving in the military. These include the discipline, pride of service to country, etc., as people usually describe them. However, I also thought about the value I got out of my military service ... value such as career-building experience, the ability to experiment and innovate with things no one else had attempted. I had not expected that going into the military, but I sure found it there, and I took advantage of it. Thanks, U.S. Air Force. I appreciated what you allowed me to learn how to do.
