Appreciating Diversity at GP All Year Long

This time of year, we reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to service and how both at a company and a personal level we strive to better the communities in which we live and work. That message is something we continue to do, but the concept of appreciating diversity at Georgia-Pacific is also a fitting way we celebrate the life of Dr. King all year long.

Dr. King had a dream that one day men and women would be judged not by the color of their skin, but on the content of their character. At GP, when we hire and promote employees, we consider things like values before knowledge and skills. We strive to maintain and grow a diverse workforce, just as we serve a diverse customer and consumer base.
Our management approach called MBM® and our Guiding Principles stress the importance of diversity – and thereby an appreciation of people with a broad range of backgrounds, experiences, skills and aptitudes.
Principle 9, Respect, says:
Treat others with honesty, dignity, respect and sensitivity. Appreciate the value of diversity. Encourage and practice teamwork.
By treating each other with honesty, dignity, respect and sensitivity, we create an environment where everyone’s voice can be heard, which is necessary for new ideas to flourish.

Seeking diverse and differing viewpoints help us find a better ways of doing things and allows us to create greater value for our company and society overall.

I hope everyone takes a moment this Martin Luther King Day to reflect on the multitude of lessons Dr. King has taught us as we continue to practice them every day.
