Environment at Green Bay
Georgia-Pacific’s Green Bay Operations are focused on protecting the health and safety of our employees, our community and our environment. Safety is our most important priority, and our safety vision is to create workplaces in Green Bay where no one can ever get hurt.
We conduct all our affairs lawfully and with integrity, and comply with all local, state and federal laws and regulations. We strive for 100 percent compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and a focus of delivering environmental and sustainability leadership across our energy, water, air and recycling programs.
To help drive long-term value environmental compliance excellence, we continuously adopt energy efficiency initiatives in our equipment, lighting, heating and cooling and in the responsible use of water across our operations. At Broadway, we recycle storm water and wastewater, and have an on-site wastewater treatment facility. Some residue from Broadway’s wastewater treatment plant is sent to a local Green Bay company where it is transformed into a marketable product. We also burn some of this residue to reduce landfill space consumption, generate steam and produce a saleable ash product.
Our environmental efforts have been recognized through numerous awards including the Environmental Sustainability Award from the Greater Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, a “Watershed Hero” by the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance and a “Business Friend of the Environment” by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC).
One of the most important projects recently completed was the Broadway mill’s move completely away from coal in its operations. Through the addition of two natural gas boilers, this multi-year investment of nearly $70 million has made the Broadway mill completely coal-free and has achieved a 99.9% reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions and a 95% reduction in nitrous oxide emissions.
